Employees participating in the protest requested time off and then added an out-of-office response to their emails notifying senders they are protesting, The New York Times reports. ‘Let me breathe, I can’t breathe.’ It’s ripped open anew this ugly underbelly of our society. Some Facebook employees are virtually walking out today to challenge the company’s lack of response to President Donald Trump’s posts pertaining to protests in light of the brutal killing of George Floyd. A wound far older and deeper than George Floyd’s killing-and his brutal, brutal death captured on film. A white reporter also on the ground was not.”Īs the news from Minneapolis continues to unfold, with no signs of the protests ebbing, the George Floyd killing is sure to be an issue in the 2020 presidential campaign.Īt a virtual fundraiser Thursday night that featured performances by Sheryl Crow, Rufus Wainwright, and Jimmy Buffett, Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee for president, addressed Floyd’s death by saying, “We can’t ignore that we are in a country with an open wound right now. Omar Jimenez is not.” (Jimenez identifies as black and Latino.) CNN later doubled-down on that message, tweeting: “A black reporter from CNN was arrested while legally covering the protests in Minneapolis. Then Berman interjected, “Let me just say something, and it is a statement of fact: You, Josh Campbell are white. “My experience has been the opposite of what Omar experienced,” Campbell said, adding that after he had identified himself as being with CNN, the police officer he was talking to said, “You’re good to go.”Ĭampbell said it was “something we have never seen-a journalist identifying himself as covering a story is then taken into custody.” He added, “They saw the cameras, they saw the live shot in progress Omar identified himself to police.” Berman asked Campbell if he had encountered any problems of his own with police. Soon, CNN anchors Alisyn Camerota and John Berman were interviewing CNN correspondent Josh Campbell, who had been reporting from a block away at the same time that Jimenez was being arrested. Jimenez and his crew were released shortly afterward, and Jimenez was soon back on camera. Tim Walz has apologized for the arrest of a CNN reporter and camera crew and says he will have them released. That tweet was perhaps the most astonishing event of the day. The situation in Minneapolis threatened to spiral out of control on Friday, as riots continued overnight and into the pre-dawn hours, police arrested a CNN reporter who was simply covering the scene with his three-person crew, and the president of the United States, in an extraordinary tweet, apparently called for protestors to be shot if any looting took place.
